The difference between МЫТЬ, СТИРАТЬ и ЧИСТИТЬ

Very often, Russian language learners confuse the verbs МЫТЬ, СТИРАТЬ и ЧИСТИТЬ (to clean, wash, and wash😊). Verbs are very important because we often use them in everyday life. So let’s discuss the difference between these words.

МЫТЬ/ПОМЫТЬ – The verb МЫТЬ is used if we remove dirt from the surface with water. Actually, we use this verb for everything except clothes.

Посудомоечная машина – dishwasher

мыть посуду – To wash the dishes

мыть пол – To wash the floor

мыть машину – To wash the car

мыть окно – To wash the window

мыть руки – To wash your hands

мыть голову – To wash your hair

Перед едой нужно обязательно мыть руки. – It is necessary to wash your hands before eating.

Она моет голову каждое утро. – She washes her hair every morning.

Завтра обещают хорошую погоду, и я планирую помыть машину. – Good weather is promised tomorrow, and I plan to wash the car.

СТИРАТЬ\ПОСТИРАТЬ – to do the laundry. We use this verb if there is a combination of water and fabric.

стиральная машина – washing machine –

стирать одежду – to wash clothes

стирать скатерть – to wash the tablecloth

стирать платье – to wash the dress

Утром я разлила кофе, и теперь мне нужно постирать скатерть. – I spilled the coffee this morning, and now I need to wash the tablecloth.

Я очень не люблю стирать руками, поэтому я стираю в стиральной машине. – I really don’t like to wash with my hands, so I do it in the washing machine.

!!! Стирать has another meaning: to erase, to rub.

ЧИСТИТЬ\ПОЧИСТИТЬ – to brush; this verb is used when we use a brush for cleaning.

Я чищу                               мы чистим

он\она чистит                    они чистят

чистить зубы – to brush your teeth

чистить мебель (щёткой) – to brush furniture (with a brush)

чистить обувь – to brush shoes

Врачи рекомендуют чистить зубы два раза в день. – Doctors recommend brushing your teeth twice a day.

У меня есть кот, поэтому мне приходится регулярно чистить ковры в квартире. – I have a cat, so I have to clean the carpets in the apartment regularly.
