Colors and Shades in Russian. Цвета и оттенки в русском языке

Colors in Russian can be divided into several groups. Let’s start with the basic colors.

The Basic Colors

Чёрный – black

Бѐлый – white

Кра̀сный – red

Жёлтый – yellow

Ора̀нжевый – orange

Зелёный – green

Сѝний – dark blue

Фиолѐтовый – violet

Ро̀зовый – pink

Корѝчневый – brown

Сѐрый – grey

Голубо̀й – blue

I’m not very good at physics so I know nothing about the scientific names of colors. So I’ll call the following group the non-basic color 😊

Пастѐльный – pastel

Бѐжевый – beige

Пурпу̀рный – magenta

А̀лый – scarlet

Багро̀вый – crimson

Colors derived from food and drink names

Бордо̀вый (вѝнный)– burgundy

Кофѐйный – coffee

Крѐмовый – cream

Ко̀фе с молоко̀м – coffee with milk

Моло̀чный – milky

Colors derived from the names of natural materials

Золотѝстый – golden

Золото̀й – gold

Серѐбряный – silver

Серебрѝстый – silver

Лососёвый – salmon

Цвет морско̀й волны̀ – aquamarine

Изумру̀дный – emerald

Индѝго – indigo

Кора̀лловый – coral

Ха̀ки – khaki

Colors derived from plant names

Лило̀вый – purple

Перламу̀тровый – mother-of-pearl

Фу̀ксия – fuchsia

Сирѐневый – lilac

Лава̀ндовый – lavender

Слѝвовый – plum

Ла̀ймовый – lime

Малѝновый – raspberry

Грана̀товый – pomegranate

Cала̀товый – light green

Вишнёвый – cherry

Shades

Сѝний + зелёный = сѝне-зелёный

Жёлтый + кра̀сный = жёлто-кра̀сный

Суффикс -ish = -оват- (slightly)

Зеленоватый – greenish

Красноватый – reddish

Желтоватый – yellowish

Color Saturation

Тёмно- – dark

Светло- – light

Ярко – bright

Насыщенно –saturated

Тёмно-зелёный – dark green

Свѐтло-кра̀сный – light red

Я̀рко-голубо̀й – bright blue

Насы̀щенно-жёлтый – rich yellow
