ЗВАТЬ vs. НАЗЫВАТЬСЯ

Hello, my dear readers.

Today’s article is about another pair of veeery confusing Russian verbs: звать and называ̀ться. Both of them we use to identify a name. Let’s compare them and figure out the difference.

Звать  (to call)

Меня̀ зову̀т А̀нна. – My name’s Anna.

Мою̀ подру̀гу зову̀т Ирѝна. – My friend’s name’s Irina.

Мою̀ ко̀шку зову̀т Му̀рка. – My cat’s name is Murka.

Как зову̀т твоего̀ бра̀та? – What’s your brother’s name?

Как зову̀т ва̀шего но̀вого преподава̀теля?-  What’s your new professor’s name?

Называ̀ться (passive of «Называ̀ть», to be called)

Э̀та кнѝга называ̀ется «Война̀ и мир». – This book is called “ War and Peace”.

Как называ̀ется твоя̀ любѝмая гру̀ппа? – What’s the name of your favorite band?

Как называ̀ется го̀род, в кото̀ром ты живёшь? – What’s the name of the city you live in?

As you can see we use “звать” with people and animals (don’t forget, that animals are animate for Russians), whereas “называться” is used for things.
